Iowa's Got Life

Let's take a moment to celebrate the first two American heroes of 2012- hats off to Edith and Carolyn of the Republican Iowa caucus in Clinton County. It appears that on-the-ground reporting still does exist. We may have "Minority Report"-esque touch screen graphics, but please don't be fooled; the results of the 2012 Iowa caucus were dispensed to the American people by means of one old lady banging on the door of another old lady's house in order to wake her up and re-report ballots. Do yourself a favor and watch the live footage from CNN on youtube...I promise you won't be disappointed. Thank you to Edith and Carolyn for your continued service and dedication to democracy. Without you, we wouldn't have known the Iowa caucus winner at 3 am instead of the next morning. Whew.

Movie Catch Up's Got Life

There comes a time in every conversation, no matter the depth of relation, where it steers toward whether or not the experience of some shared piece has been undertaken by either party.

Person 1: "...[insert line from mainstream or classic movie]..."
Person 2: "Oh haha...[awkward struggle for recognition]"
Person 1: "It's from [that movie]"
Person 2: "Gotcha, yeah, never seen it"

...

You can fill in the response of flabbergasted Person 1. It makes you pause and ask yourself why it is that you haven't seen that specific movie. If you're me and I'm Person 2, then you'd be sitting in your living room right now being subjected to a daunting list of movies that must be watched, and I mean nowwww.

Not sure what it is that drives both Person 1 and 2 to adamantly declare the need for the other to see a certain movie but I'm sure it has to do with intimacy in some capacity. There is an overwhelming need in the human condition to have others relate to you. Evolutionarily this makes sense...a support group means food, shelter, sex, survival, etc. Maybe sharing contrite lines from B- rated comedies represents safety in modern society. We talk about movie "classics" as if they are special in terms of acting, cinematography, design, costumes, or writing. This may be true, and most times it is; however, a "classic" may simply by classic because some factor upon its release caused it to be viewed by millions of people. This then represents a commonality, a safe zone, a connection, an intimacy. I'll admit that we all need that. Unfortunately it can occasionally represent itself in the shape of asking someone to show you their "Oh" face circa "Office Space" and then freaking out if they don't get the reference. Oh well. At least it wasn't another Adam Sandler film.

2012's Got Life

Well this is embarrassing...
Maybe this time I'll remember that going through with this is really, realllllly worth it. That being said, welcome 2012 and goodbye dead/dying/deposed dictators of 2011- it's been good, really.

HPATHBP's got life

Finishing a few things up in the lab this week, but as soon as I get a full free day I'm going to write the most comprehensive movie review in existence for "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince". Just thought you should know and brace yourself for greatness.
